Who’s eligible for PowerShift®?
Customers who have a peaksaver PLUS device installed on their central air conditioner, electric water heater, and/or swimming pool pump are eligible to participate in the PowerShift program.
How different is PowerShift from peaksaver PLUS?
If you are a peaksaver PLUS participant, your central air conditioner, electric water heater, and/or swimming pool pump, as the case may be, may be cycled down to reduce the strain on the electricity grid. As a PowerShift participant, your central air conditioner, electric water heater and/or swimming pool pump, as the case may be, will be cycled down or off automatically when the temperature reaches 27°C and/or the humidex rises to 30°C on weekdays between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Like peaksaver PLUS, the device will not be activated on weekends or statutory holidays.
What is “power shifting” or “load shifting”?
Power or load shifting is the ability to reduce the amount of electricity used at any given time. You can power or load shift by turning off appliances or lights during peak hours and turning them on again during off-peak hours. The PowerShift program automates this by cycling your central air conditioner, electric water heater and/or swimming pool pump down or off for up to four hours per weekday when the temperature reaches 27°C and/or the humidex rises to 30°C.
How do I opt-out for a particular date?
If you would like to request that power to your air conditioner, electric water heater and /or swimming pool pump is not interrupted on a particular date, call 416.542.2557 or email us at email@example.com at least twenty-four (24) hours in advance and we will schedule the exemption. You may make an opt-out request up to three (3) times in one calendar year.
Can I make a difference by signing up?
Yes, you can. If you’re already one of more than 60,000 Toronto residents and businesses participating in peaksaver PLUS, we thank you for that. If you're not participating in peaksaver PLUS yet, we encourage you to sign up at torontohydro.com/peaksaver and then sign up for the PowerShift program. You likely won’t even notice when PowerShift is activated, but you’re making an important longer-term contribution. Reducing the overall electricity demand means we can help cut back the size of future generation requirements.
In addition to PowerShift, what can I do to “shift” my electricity usage?
Whether or not you're a PowerShift program participant, you can shift electricity usage away from "on-peak" times. For example, try to do your laundry and dishwashing during off-peak times, either evenings or weekends. Use a programmable thermostat so that in the summer, even at more moderate temperatures, your central air conditioner is used more during "off-peak" times rather than during "on-peak" times.
Can I cancel PowerShift?
You can cancel your participation in the PowerShift program by providing ten (10) business days prior written notice to Toronto Hydro by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 416.542.2557. The cancellation may take up to ten (10) business days to come into effect.
